Song of the Day:
F.Y.P “Vacation Bible School”
I can’t speak for anyone else who grew up in the South Bay of Los Angeles, but for me F.Y.P started for me as a vague symbol of rebellion. The first glimpse I got of the band was a kid in my middle school stealing some sulfuric acid from the science lab and burning the three letter into the grass. We didn’t know what it meant exactly, but we knew it had to be something bad ass.
Freshman year of high school someone handed me a tape dubbed version of Incomplete Crap. After that I got why all the cool punk kids wore their patches on backpacks and hoodies. F.Y.P were snotty and funny, rebellious yet light hearted. They were local boys, based out of Torrance and San Pedro, and played fast, thrashy, somewhat angry music. But, upon listening to it, all one can hear is a few dudes having fun and goofing around
“Vacation Bible School” is a perfect representation of the band for me. It’s a sarcastic song that’s actually pretty funny. Yea they were making fun of religion, but were in no way trying to make a social statement. I can’t help but listen to it and think about a evil freckled kid with a sling shot in his back pocket making fun of the sunday school teacher.
For me, this band stands as one of the my favorite L.A. punk bands that could easily be nestled between Redd Kross, the Screamers, and the Weirdos.
