Song of the Day:

Burial “Unite”

Something about this guy is so sad, so apocalyptic, so bleak, yet so inspiring. As I read that last sentence, I could be describing T.S. Eliot…but no, it’s all about the once anonymous Burial. However I keep seeing parallels between the writer and the musician. The dark textures, the yearning for hope, and the obscurity they leave the listener with.

When I first heard Burial he was almost presented as the posterboy for the dubstep movement. So like with anything else new, I went out and bought as many dubstep compilations as I could, to discover all of it. However, although the genre is itself compelling, Burial for me goes beyond what the movement is and makes emotional charged music that gives me the same feeling an Arvo Pärt piece does.

“Unite” is off the Box of Dub: Vol. 1 comp that Soul Jazz records released. It is a perfect song to represent everything I love about the obscure producer with it’s ambient drones, in your face drums, and R&B loops. It’s just all so beautiful. It’s dance music for people who know the future’s bleak.
