Song of the Day:
The xx- “Heart Skipped a Beat”
The thing about popular music lately is that there is too much sound. Psychedelic electronic jam bands, fuzz-punk, shoegaze revival…sometimes it all becomes too much. What happened to just a guitar riff, a drums beat, and some steady bass.
The xx strip it down, way down…almost a little too down. However, their minimalist pop is exactly what I needed, without even knowing it. With the music and the lyrics they hold back, allude, almost tease the listener…and it makes it all the more perfect.
It’s also hard with them to find a song, since the whole album is so good. All the songs could be singles, but they all work so perfectly together. However when I heard “Heart Skipped a Beat” over the stereo when I was at work, it made me so happy. I don’t know what it is, its such a seemingly bare song full of post-teen infatuation. It’s youthful in the most dramatic way possible.
